Rob Berghmans, founder of the well-known Antwerp-based coffee roaster Caff\u00e8nation (20 years old, 4 locations), was invited by Gazet van Antwerpen<\/em> to participate in a blind cupping session of 14 different arabica coffee brands. His verdict? Oxfam Fair Trade\u2019s Congo coffee scored the highest in taste<\/strong>, and he praised its exceptional price-quality ratio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expert judgement with a critical eye<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t expect much from this test,\u201d said Berghmans, who\u2019s been in the coffee business for 21 years. \u201cWe sell specialty coffee beans of the highest quality, which are lighter roasted compared to most supermarket coffees \u2013 the focus of this test.\u201d But the Congo coffee from Oxfam Fair Trade clearly stands out and shouldn\u2019t be lumped in with standard supermarket blends<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His 8\/10 score<\/strong> came with this glowing review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNice balance between acidity and sweetness. I taste raspberry and lemon zest. That balance is key \u2013 in cooking and in coffee. Light roast, pleasant to drink, and perfect as filter coffee. I\u2019d love to drink this at home. At this price? It\u2019s a steal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The winner? I’d definitely drink it at home. Unbelievable that such good coffee is sold at that price.”<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Affordable top quality that benefits everyone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Compared to the 13 other brands in the test, Oxfam\u2019s Congo coffee stood out not just for flavour, but also for price<\/strong>. Some coffees cost up to 50% more<\/strong>, yet scored significantly lower<\/strong> on taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oxfam\u2019s coffee pricing is based on a guaranteed fair trade minimum price<\/strong>, which increases when the market rises but does not fall below a set threshold<\/strong>, even when the market does. In addition, Oxfam pays a fair trade premium per kilo<\/strong>, which increases depending on quality and organic certification \u2014 as is the case for this award-winning Congo coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when you choose this coffee, you get outstanding quality and<\/strong> you support smallholder coffee farmers, who often only receive a tiny fraction of the final retail price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cupping: the gold standard for coffee tasting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  • Use 18 ml of water<\/strong> (just under boiling) per gram of ground coffee<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Let the coffee steep for 4 minutes<\/strong>, then first taste at 60\u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Coffee is slurped \u2014 just like wine \u2014 to fully engage the taste buds<\/li>\n\n\n\n
