It was founded in 1997 by the government as a <strong>social project<\/strong>. The intention was to offer farmers in the region an <strong>alternative<\/strong> to the ubiquitous <strong>coca plantations<\/strong>. In the meantime, most of them have transitioned to the cultivation of palm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More specifically, they grow an <strong>indigenous species of palm<\/strong> that has many branches. They harvest the buds that grow on these. The soft core (the \u2018heart\u2019) is then cooked to make it ready to eat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfamwereldwinkels.be\/nieuws\/apropal-cooperatie-met-palmhart-en-ziel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Discover the production process of heart of palm<\/a>&nbsp;<em>(info in Dutch)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today Apropal is one of Peru\u2019s largest exporters of heart of palm (in cans and jars). At this point over <strong>350 farming families<\/strong> are reaping the benefits of the cooperative. In addition to this, the cooperative employs around 30 people in the <strong>processing plant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainable cultivation, sustainable trade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apropal is undertaking sustainability initiatives in every aspect of the organisation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The producers utilise the principles of agroforestry: they plant different species of (edible or inedible) plants between the palm trees.<\/li><li>Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfamwereldwinkels.be\/partnerwerking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>fair trade premium<\/strong><\/a> <em>(info in Dutch)<\/em>, Apropal organises <strong>workshops <\/strong>on capacity development, quality, etc. It also invests in social projects in the region.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All this is delivering fantastic results. The region looks a lot different since the arrival of Apropal. Now that the farmers can sell, process and export heart of palm for a fair price, their lives have become a lot <strong>more stable<\/strong>. The palm producers of Apropal still face a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfamwereldwinkels.be\/nieuws\/ik-\u2665-palmharten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenges<\/a> <em>(info in Dutch)<\/em>, however.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Life has improved here over the last ten years: less terrorism, less drug trafficking. Its typical <strong>flavour and texture<\/strong> is somewhat reminiscent of asparagus.
